Required checkups before installation

  • Verify that the maximum amperage of the main circuit breaker complies with the parameters of the heater.
  • Ensure that the power rating (kW) of the STEEL electric sauna heater matches the cubic size (m3) of the steam room. In case there are uninsulated walls made of bricks, tiles, glass or logs in the steam room, additional volume of 1.5 m3 per each such square meter of the wall should be added to the cubic size of the steam room.
  • The minimal safety distance from the ceiling and the walls of the steam room that apply to positioning of the electric sauna heater are presented in Table 1.

Installation of the sauna heater

When positioning the STEEL electric sauna heater, ensure that there is safe clearance between flammable materials and external surfaces of the heater.

  • When choosing the location, ensure that you can conveniently throw water on the sauna rocks when sitting on the sauna bench.
  • Ensure that the location of the heater does not create hazardous situations during its use. Make sure that people do not have to pass too closely by the hot heater.
  • Table 1 gives an overview of the minimal safety distance that should remain between the heater and the ceiling and the walls of the steam room.
  • Power cable inlets are located on the bottom cover of the heater.
  • STEEL 6, 9 and 11 sauna heaters are attached to the floor with the supplied brackets. Mount the bracket to the heater leg as shown below and fix it with a screw that is suitable for the floor material (minimum recommendable measures for the screw: 6 x 40 mm).

        Table 1

Connecting the sauna heater to the power supply

Only a certified electrician may connect the heater to the power supply.

  • A rubber insulated SIHF-JB cable or an equivalent cable must be used as the connection cable. It is forbidden to use a PVC insulated non-heat-resistant cable as the power cable of the heater.
  • The junction box must be waterproof and located up to 50 cm from the floor.
  • It is recommendable to connect the unit to the mains power supply without an earth leakage circuit breaker.
  • The cross-sectional area of the cable and maximum amperage of the circuit breaker are provided in Table 2.

Table 2 Power rating (kW) Heating elements (kW) Circuit breaker (A) Power cable (N x mm²)
STEEL 6 6 2 3 x 10 5 x 1.5
STEEL 9 9 3 3 x 16 5 x 2.5
STEEL 11 10,5 3,5 3 x 16 5 x 2.5

  • Open the cover of the heater’s electrical box.
  • Connect the power cable with the terminal board as shown on the circuit diagram.
  • Close the cover.
  • Fix the cable in the cable clamp.

Sauna stones

  • Sauna stones with a diameter of 3–5 cm are suitable for STEEL electric sauna heaters. It is recommendable to use round sauna stones in HUUM sauna heaters. Round stones complement the design of the heaters and provide milder steam. Our product range includes round olivine diabase sauna stones and are sold in packs weighing 15 kg.
  • Of course, sauna rocks from other manufacturers may be used in HUUM sauna heaters, but in such case it is recommendable to choose stones that are specifically meant to be used in sauna heaters, and to avoid decorative stones as those might break easily.

Installation of the safety railing of STEEL electric sauna heater

  • Attach the brackets of the safety railing with screws to wood, but don’t tighten the internal screw for subsequent mounting steps.
  • Connect the wooden profiles to form the angular guard.
  • Position the safety railing on the sauna heater so that the external wall of the heater locks between the side bends of the bracket.
  • Fix the guard by tightening the screws between the bracket and wood.
  • Twist the lower ends of the bracket tightly around the heater wall so that the bracket does not move. It is recommended to use tweezers when doing this. Ready!
  • Regular maintenance with a breathable wood preservative helps to extend the useful life of the wooden parts of the safety railing. Use products that are intended for sauna! As a rule, it is sufficient to perform the maintenance once a year, but maintenance interval might be shortened if you use the sauna frequently.

Installation of the embedding flange of STEEL electric sauna heater

  • Prepare the opening for the embedding flange. Refer to the figure below.
  • It is important to maintain inclined cuts in the corners for attaching the screws.
  • Position the slats so that they fit around the opening.
  • Drill screw holes with a diameter of 3 mm to the central fixation points of the slats.
  • Fix the slats with the supplied screws. You’re set to go!

Installation of the reflector of STEEL electric sauna heater

  • Attach the reflector to the desired side of the heater so that the upper hooks of the reflector lock around the upper narrow fin of the heater. Fix the lower hooks around the closest fin. Ensure that the upper margin of the reflector and the highest rim of the heater remain level. Ready!
  • Important! In the case that you also intend to use the safety railing, attach the reflector before mounting the wooden part of the safety railing.
  • Important! To ensure convenience of mounting, attach the reflector before stacking the sauna stones.
